In a sensational series of upsets fourteen year old Tahitian Ocean Belrose

Gold and Silver medallist'sIn a sensational series of upsets fourteen year old Tahitian Ocean Belrose and his partner 18 year old Rachel Hsiao won a tight five set match against Oceans older brother Alize Belrose and his partner Cyrine Sam.

The two youngsters had caused a number of upsets on the way. In the second round they defeated 3-0 the number one seeds Wang QI and Rujuan Qu. They next defeated Vanuatu ’s Ham Lulu and Priscila Tommy, in the semi-final they defeated fellow Tahitians Tinohau Klouman and Melveen Richmond 3-2.

Tahiti Wins SPG Table Tennis Mixed Gold

Fourteen years old Tahitian Ocean Belrose and his partner eighteen year old Rachel Hsiao won the gold medals of the mixed match Saturday in Apia at 2007 South Pacific Games.

They have proven skills and desire to win in a tight five set match against Alize Belrose and his partner Cyrine Sam also from Tahiti.

In the second round the young pair defeated 3-0 the number one seeds Wang Qi and Rujuan Qu. They next defeated Vanuatu's Ham Lulu and Priscila Tommy, in the semi-final they defeated fellow Tahitians Tinohau Klouman and Melveen Richmond 3-2.

Tahitian Table Tennis Federation President Gerald Huioutu said it was the first time Ocean has competed in the South Pacific Games but the second for Rachel.

Ocean said he was very happy as it is the first time he played in a tournament like this.

New Caledonia and Tahiti Share the Doubles Spoils in Samoa

Meanwhile, in the Mixed Doubles, Tahiti was very much to the fore; they provided three of the four semi-finalists and both finalists.

The gold medal went to Ocean Belrose and Rachle Hsiao, who overcame Alize Belrose and Cyrine Sam in the final. The respective losing semi-finalists were Tahiti’s Tinihau-O-Terai Klouman and Melveen Richmond plus Vanuatu’s Yoshua Shing and Anolyn Lulu.

Yoshua Shing and Anolyn Lulu finished in third place beating Tinihau-O-Terai Klouman and Melveen Richmond in the play off encounter.

Exciting matches with Ocean Belrose in particular the player to catch the eye of Andrew Hubbard, the Oceania Development Manager.

Last 32 match, six time SPG veteran Norman Joe who played his first SPG in ‘83’ here in Samoa was involved in a 7 set match against yesterday’s mixed doubles gold medalist, Tahiti’s fourteen year old Ocean Belrose. He led early in the seventh set but couldn’t hold on to the lead. Norman quote’ I would have played seven if it wasn’t for the coup in Fiji in 87, the younger guys are just to fast for me, I’m getting old now but I still give the younger guys a hard time, the game itself is getting to fast for me”

Samoan personality Frankie Cai was in a hard fought battle with Kiribati ’s Kevin Reo, saving a match point in the fifth set but lost in six close sets.

Young Tahitian player Tinihau-O-Terai Klouman defeated a disappointing Taati Barao and will now play first seed Fiji’s Wang Qi in the last sixteen.
